About

Saint Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College was opened and became higher education institution in 2007 under Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health (EFMOH).

St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) Nursing Education Directorate started with two specialty Nursing Programs namely: Operating Theatre Nursing and Emergency and Critical Care Nursing in March 2012 in collaboration with Trauma care Ethiopia and Children Burn Care Foundation.

Nursing Education Directorate was scaled up to School of Nursing (SoN) by College’s Senate pronouncement in 2022. Thereafter, SPHMMC showed interest and developed different curriculums for nursing and currently the Nursing School is running five different specialty programs for undergraduate and five Master of Science (MSC) program at Postgraduate level. The five different specialty undergraduate programs are: Pediatrics and Child Health nursing, Surgical Nursing, Neonatal Nursing, and Emergency and Critical Care Nursing and Operative Theatre Nursing. During the opening of the Post-Basic training center students are selected individuals who had diploma in nursing and trained two and half year to be graduated as BSc nurses in the respective programs.

Similarly, Postgraduate programs include; Critical Care Nursing, Paramedics, Neonatal Nursing, Cardiovascular Nursing, Oncology Nursing and Cardio-thoracic Surgery Nursing.  Candidates are selected based on the admission criteria mentioned in each program’s curricula. Overall, the School is in a continuous and consistent progress to expand its programs in line with the national growth and development agendas and stepping forward the nursing profession of the country. Therefore, St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, Nursing School has upgraded existing curriculum and new postgraduate program to Nursing Residency approaches. This curriculum is designed to train qualified, skilled nurses and prepare nurses who can meet current health care needs. Nurse Residency Program (NRP) contribute to produce highly trained nurses with a substantial focus on patient safety by providing the opportunity for nursing residents to gain “real world” experience in care setting and also supports the nurses in their development as confident and competent practitioners. It involves a hands-on learning approach where the residents are able to take responsibility for patients’ care independently with the supervision of preceptors to become fully competent professionals. This is believed to enhance the quality of nursing service and education, address skills shortages, address system orientation and empower nurses to deliver high-quality healthcare services within the country.

In this respect currently SoN of SPHMMC has shifted four postgraduate programs (Critical Care Nursing, Neonatal Nursing, Oncology Nursing and Cardiovascular Nursing) from classroom-based lectures to hospital-based and learning by doing- which is residency in nursing.

St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College School of Nursing will open Nursing PhD program under the umbrella of newly restructured one PhD program at St Paul’s hospital millennium medical college (SPHMMC) in 2024/25, by organizing its workforce.
