Introduction
The Obstetrics and Gynecology department of the SPHMMC is one of the pioneers to launch residency program in the college. It was established in 2012-13G.c admitting the first 7 residents. So far it has successfully graduated the 2nd batch of competent ObGyns who are serving in the various regions of Ethiopia. The program has increased its capacity progressively and currently the average number of admissions is 28 per year.
The residency program is a 4yrs training given in rotations at Saint Paul’s, Ras Desta, Yekatit 12 and Menilik Hospitals; Kolfe health center and Hamlin Fistula Hospital. There is also a one month rural (community) attachment for 3rd year students at Worabe (SNNP region). Residents also have the privilege to acquire international experience through yearly travels abroad (notably Germany, US and Rwanda). The utilization of innovative teaching approaches and many affiliate sites for the training mark the peculiar features of the residency program.
Goal
To produce qualified and committed Obstetricians and Gynecologists who provide comprehensive care and services for the promotion of the reproductive & sexual health, for reduction of the currently high rate of maternal and perinatal mortality/morbidity.
Objectives
The Objectives of this specialty training program in Obstetrics and Gynecology will be:
- To train medical doctors who would be capable of providing comprehensive clinical care in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
- To prepare residents to participate in teaching and learning activities of residents themselves, integrated emergency obstetrics and surgery students, medical students and other health science students.
- To equip residents in evaluation of evidences and critical appraisal scientific journals
- To prepare residents for further sub-speciality trainings in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Admission Requirements
- Graduate from a recognized university with a degree in Doctor of Medicine
- Work experience as per the institution’s legislation guidelines
- Two recommendation letters from recognized persons or university (One from professional referee & another from academic referee).
- Comply with the rules and regulations of graduate program of the university
- Comply with the rules and regulations of the national policies of the graduate programs pertaining to medicine.
- Complete physical and mental health to be determined by the department.

The resident should
- Complete 4 years of the academic program successfully.
- Defended their thesis successfully.
- Pass the final examination with 70% and above
