A national Reproductive Health Symposium under the theme of “Prospects of family planning and comprehensive abortion care services in Ethiopia” was successfully conducted on November 1, 2019. The Symposium was organized by St Paul Hospital Millennium Medical College – Centre of Excellence in Reproductive Health project organized with the aim of disseminating research findings and current practices in the areas of family planning and comprehensive abortion care (CAC). It brought researchers and practitioners in the area of family planning (FP) and comprehensive abortion care together to highlight the importance of evidence based practice.
An official opening and keynote speech was made by Dr Meseret Zelalem, Maternal Child Health (MCH) director, at Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) and Prof. Senait Fisseha, Senior Advisor to WHO Director General and Director of International programs for STBF respectively.
Challenges on the FP/CAC services provision and legal perspective of CAC in Ethiopia were presented by invited panellists from the Ministry of Health, EngenderHealth, Amhara Regional State Health Bureau, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, Population Services International (PSI) and an expert in medico legal issues.
Selected ten oral and six posters were also presented and state of art public lecture was provided on Evidence -Based Medical Management of Abortion in the second trimester: Each presentations were followed by active audience participation on discussion, question and answer. Over 120 participants including OB/GYN faculties and residents and midwifery professional form Academic institutions, representatives from non-governmental organization and Regional Health Bureau attended the symposium. Certificate of appreciation were presented to all oral and poster presenters for their participation while the best oral and poster presenters were awarded at the end of the symposium.
